Overview
What is an ISO Auditor Extension Course?
An ISO Auditor Extension Course is designed for certified ISO auditors who wish to expand their qualifications to include additional ISO standards.
These courses build on an auditor’s existing knowledge and skills, allowing them to audit a broader range of management systems.
Rather than starting from scratch, extension courses provide focused training on new standards, enabling auditors to extend the scope of their certifications efficiently.
What can you get from enrolling in an ISO extension course?
When auditors who are already certified to an ISO standard want to expand their credentials to include another ISO standard, the traditional option has typically been limited to attending a full training program—such as a two-day Internal Auditor course or a five-day Lead Auditor course.
For busy professionals or smaller organizations with tighter budgets, this can be difficult to manage.
deGRANDSON Global makes it easier by offering ISO extension courses: a shorter, more affordable, and convenient e-learning option that allows you to extend your ISO certification without committing to a full-length classroom program.
How does e-training work?
deGRANDSON Global delivers its ISO Extension courses entirely through e-training using a secure Learning Management System (LMS). Everything from registration to lessons, quizzes, exams, and certification is handled online, giving you full flexibility over when and where you learn.
Courses are self-paced and available 24/7, so you can start at any time and progress at your own speed.
Lessons are typically 15–30 minutes long and divided into modules covering auditing skills, knowledge of the standard, and practical scenarios.
To support learning, the courses include:
-
Full audio narration and optional closed captions
-
Visual aids, diagrams, and flowcharts
-
Support documents and printable course materials
-
Quizzes at the end of each lesson with automated feedback and remediation to reinforce learning
-
Online module examinations (open-book) and certificates immediately available upon passing
The LMS also features a Full Resume function, allowing you to pause a lesson and continue later, even from a different device.
If you ever get stuck, 24/7 Tutor Support is available via the LMS or the website. You simply submit a support ticket, and a qualified expert will respond, typically within a couple of hours.
What are my ISO Extension Course Options?
When looking to extend your ISO certification to another standard, deGRANDSON offers two types of extension courses, designed to suit different professional needs and levels of responsibility:
-
Internal Auditor Extension Courses – These are typically around 7 hours in duration. They are ideal for:
-
Internal auditors who are already certified to an ISO standard and want to expand their auditing skills to cover an additional ISO standard.
-
Professionals who perform internal audits within their organization and need focused training on the new standard without committing to a full lead auditor program.
-
Individuals who are looking for practical, concise, and on-demand training that fits within a busy schedule.
-
Lead Auditor Extension Courses – These are typically around 20 hours in duration. They are best suited for:
-
Lead auditors or audit team leaders who wish to broaden their credentials and gain the skills needed to lead audits against another ISO standard.
-
Professionals seeking in-depth training covering auditing principles, detailed knowledge of the standard, and scenario-based exercises for real-world audit situations.
-
Individuals who want a comprehensive, structured program that prepares them for the official ISO certification exam for the new standard.
By choosing the course type that matches your current role and objectives, you can efficiently expand your ISO credentials without repeating full-length programs unnecessarily, saving both time and cost.
Scope
Are the ISO Extension courses focused on the auditing process, implementation, or both?
The ISO Extension Courses cover both the auditing process and implementation aspects. They are designed to provide comprehensive knowledge and skills in both areas, ensuring that participants are well-equipped to conduct audits as well as implement the necessary systems effectively.
How do your ISO Extension Courses build upon my current ISO auditor certification?
deGRANDSON’s ISO Extension courses are designed to build directly on the knowledge and skills you already have, so you don’t need to repeat previous training. Instead, the courses focus on the specific requirements, auditing techniques, and practical applications of the new ISO standard you want to add to your credentials.
This approach makes the courses efficient and cost-effective, particularly for busy professionals or smaller organizations, because you can extend your certification without committing to a full-length internal or lead auditor program.
Lessons include knowledge of the standard, scenario-based exercises, practical auditing tips, and guidance for managing audits, all tailored to expand your existing expertise.
Additionally, the courses provide templates, checklists, and documented examples that are specific to the new standard, helping you integrate it seamlessly into your current auditing process.
Is the training focused on theoretical knowledge, or does it include practical, hands-on auditing exercises?
Both are included in our courses. Module 3 of all regular courses is focused on the practical application of the knowledge and skills gained in Modules 1 and 2.
Are there any specific methodologies or frameworks taught that differ from my current auditing process?
It depends on the specific methodologies or frameworks you are currently using. Since deGRANDSON’s extension courses focus on standard auditing practices aligned with ISO standards, there is a good probability of an overlap.
That said, the courses are designed to be comprehensive, incorporating practical hints, tips, and real-world scenarios that can highlight best practices, bridge gaps, and show how standard ISO approaches can be integrated or adapted into your existing process.
Does the course address how to manage audits for multiple standards simultaneously (e.g., conducting integrated audits for ISO 9001 and ISO 14001)?
Integrated audits are not recommended. Certifications Bodies always audit against standards individually,
Are the courses tailored to specific industries (e.g., manufacturing, healthcare, IT), or are they general enough to apply to a broad range of sectors?
Generally, no. The exceptions are ISO 13485 for the medical device sector and ISO 17025 for test and calibration laboratories.
What core knowledge and skills will I gain from enrolling in your ISO Extension Courses?
deGRANDSON’s ISO Extension Courses are designed to provide both in-depth knowledge of the standard and practical auditing skills, tailored to the specific ISO standard being studied. While the exact content varies by standard, all courses focus on two main areas:
-
Knowledge of the Standard – You will learn the structure, requirements, and terminology of the relevant ISO standard, including:
-
Introduction to the standard and its purpose
-
Terms and definitions
-
Key requirements for the management system (QMS, EMS, ISMS, OH&S, or laboratory competence)
-
Context of the organization, leadership, planning, support, operations, performance evaluation, and improvement
-
Advanced aspects of auditing, such as risk assessment, regulatory compliance, and application of annexes or guidance documents where relevant
-
Auditing Skills and Practical Application – The courses provide hands-on practice and guidance to:
-
Conduct internal audits aligned with ISO requirements
-
Apply auditing techniques for the specific management system (quality, environmental, information security, occupational health & safety, medical devices, or testing/calibration laboratories)
-
Perform risk identification, analysis, and treatment (for applicable standards)
-
Review documented procedures, audit plans, work orders, and nonconformity reports
-
Manage real-world audit scenarios and challenges, including handling difficult situations and interactions
-
Use checklists, templates, and practical tools to implement or evaluate management systems
Delivery
How are the ISO Extension Courses delivered?
The format is the same for both internal and lead auditor extension courses: You begin with a pre-test, which is free of charge, to confirm your auditing skills.
Next, you will be given two modules of instruction. The first provides knowledge of the standard. The second lets you practice what you’ve learned with scenarios.
Finally, there’s an online certification Examination that you will need to complete. After you’ve passed this exam, your course certificate will be immediately available for printing. Moreover, you may print as many copies as you would like.
How easily can these additional ISO standards be integrated into my current auditing workflow?
Except for ISO 13485, all other ISO Management System Standards have the same basic structure (HLS – High-Level Structure) and can be easily integrated.
Course Materials
Do the courses provide case studies or examples relevant to industries where the new ISO standards are most commonly implemented?
Yes. Module 3 of the regular courses is devoted to this purpose.
Career Prospects
Are there industries that highly demand these auditors?
Certification bodies will only consider employing those with Lead Auditor qualifications in the relevant standards. Otherwise, auditor qualifications can be applied to all types of organizations (the standards are written to be generally applicable)
How will additional ISO standards benefit my career as an auditor?
By adding additional ISO standards to your certification, you will gain the ability to audit against multiple sets of requirements, making you more versatile and valuable in your organization or to prospective employers.
This broader skill set allows you to take on a wider range of audit assignments, from internal audits to leading external certification audits, across different management systems such as quality, environmental, information security, occupational health & safety, or medical devices.
What new job or consulting opportunities would open up after adding these ISO standards to my credentials?
Adding new ISO standards to your credentials gives you specialized expertise that organizations with multiple certifications need. This can create opportunities to offer consultancy services, helping companies implement, integrate, or improve their management systems across different standards.
Will these extension courses allow me to audit multiple standards in one organization, or would I still need separate audits for each standard?
A combined Audit Program and individual programs for each standard may be used.
How do these certifications compare with other professional development options?
The Course Pages show the number of Continued Professional Development (CPD) Units earned for each of our courses. This information will help you choose between course options.
